About a year ago I brought an avocado to the office, as part of my lunch. My colleague and close friend didn’t have a clue what that was. I told her it’s an avocado, and all she said was “avocados look like that?” with her mouth twisted. After a few minutes examining my lunch, she asked if she could taste. I split it open and offered her one half. One tiny spoon later, she gave it back and told me to enjoy my lunch, and that she likes avocados more when they are a part of guacamole. Next time I’ll keep that in mind.
To say the least, I was surprised by her reaction, of not knowing how avocados look like outside of guacamole. This really made me wonder if she has any idea of how important this super food is to our health and beauty. So in order to encourage her and others to dig more into avocados, I have listed a few qualities that make the fruit one of my leading go to foods as well as the beauty qualities inside and out.
Avocados are yummy
Of course I have to start with the taste. My love affair with avocados started when I was pretty young; before I even knew avocados had any health benefits. I remember my siblings and I used to add the fruit to any food because it made the taste better. During my high school years, my breakfast included an avocado sandwich – two pieces of toast with slices of avocado in between. That was delicious and filling! Right now, if you happened to walk through my kitchen door, the first thing you will notice are the avocados; well and the lemons of course.
Contains fiber
Avocados are just the best when it comes to soluble and insoluble fiber. Actually, half an avocado can contain up to 3.5 grams of this nutrient which plays a key role in keeping your digestive system running smoothly.

Lowers cholesterol
If I told you avocados are not filled with fat I would be telling a little white lie. To the contrary, they are full of fats, but the good kind which are known as monounsaturated fats. These fats help in lowering cholesterol levels through a compound known as beta-sitosterol. So if you are a bit worried about your blood cholesterol levels, just head over to your nearest grocery store and grab yourself an avocado.
Avocado is Good for your heart
This creamy fruit is high in folate, a nice vitamin that lowers your risks of heart disease and heart attacks. If you know that you are at risk of heart problems, today would be a great day for you to start including avocado in your diet.
Great for unborn babies
Folate, mentioned above, also cuts the risks of birth defects. Avocados contain a considerable amount of this vitamin. Depending on the size of your avocado (the fruit not the baby), you can give yourself almost 25% of your daily required intake, just from one piece. So, not only is a serving of avocado good for your heart, it will also protect your unborn baby.
Awesome for skin health
Avocados contain a lot of vitamins, antioxidants and fatty acids, which if ingested, can drastically improve the health of your skin from the inside out. The vitamins C and E found in this super food provide anti-aging benefits through creation of new elastin and collagen as well as preventing free radicals from causing premature aging to your skin. And to revitalize and nourish your skin from the outside, you can simply make an avocado facial mask by mixing avocado with a few drops of lemon juice.
If this list motivates you into introducing good old avocado to your diet, it will be a great idea to get checked for allergies to the fruit first.
xoxo
