Tips to Make Your Makeup Last on Oily Skin

How to Make Makeup Last on Oily SkinWhat is the first thing that comes to mind when we mention oily skin? Is it greasy-looking skin? In as much as it may seem like a curse, oily skin is a sign that your skin is secreting healthy levels of sebum. With time, the excess sebum reduces dry patches, and sensitive skin, and recent studies suggest that oily skin is less prone to wrinkles. Don’t start flaunting yet as it also has a few cons when it comes to makeup such as finding it a little difficult to get the right makeup products and having your makeup last on oily skin all day.

Oily skin tends to dissolve makeup faster which leaves you with a shiny and almost naked face probably by afternoon. This does not mean you have to forego makeup, it is only a matter of knowing what works for your skin. You may not be able to change your skin type but with a few small changes in your routine, you can be a guru who has mastered the art of making makeup last on oily skin.

Tips for Making Makeup Last on Oily Skin

1. Cleansing and moisturizing

The key to having beautiful makeup that lasts long is having clean and moisturized skin first. You need to strip the excess sebum with a high-quality cleanser at least twice a day. This will ensure your makeup does not trap oil in your skin or mix with excess oil. Your moisturizer should hydrate your skin from the inside out. Look for products that contain hyaluronic acid which is a humectant (it draws water into your skin and helps prevent moisture loss). When your skin is hydrated, your oil glands are less likely to go into overdrive.

2. Priming Your Skin First

With an oily complexion, priming should be a ritual. Using a makeup primer helps your makeup last on oily skin longer. Prime the oiliest areas such as your T-Zone, chin, and nose. Ensure the primer you are using is oil-free and anti-shine. Make sure your face is clean before applying it, and have it as the base before putting on powder, foundation, or any other makeup. How to Make Makeup Last on Oily Skin

3. Apply Setting Powder Before Foundation

We normally only apply translucent setting powder after finishing our makeup. Let’s switch it up a little for oily skin by applying the powder before the foundation. Applying setting powder after priming and before your foundation will help absorb any excess oils. It will give your foundation something to stick to and keep your face matte and together through the day.

4. Invest in Long-wear Foundations

Long-wear foundations contain specific ingredients and formulations which enable the makeup last on oily skin. Also, make sure the foundation is oil-free as your skin already has enough oil. Never slap on heavy layers of foundation unless you want to have that cakey look. Always work in light layers using a foundation brush and only add more where you require more coverage or your problem areas.

5. Proper Way to Prime your Eye Lids

If your eye makeup is always creasing it is most likely your concealer. Most people with dark circles or redness turn to concealers which help cover this up. Concealers on oily skin increase the chances of creasing your eye makeup. Instead opt for a primer designed specifically for eyelids as this helps absorb crease-causing oils and creates a perfect base for your eyeshadow and eyeliner.

6. Keep Blotting Papers Nearby

Leaving the house with a creatively done matte makeup look can be such a confidence booster. However, if you don’t know how to make your makeup last on oily skin you’ll probably end up spot shining by noon. If used properly blotting papers can help lift the oil from your skin while some are designed to deposit a bit of powder to soak up the excess oil. Press the paper where you are oily and gently roll off your skin to avoid taking off all your makeup.

7. Avoid shiny lipsticks

Using shiny glossy lipstick can make your skin appear oiler than it is. With oily skin, you should go for matte finish lipsticks or pat some translucent powder after applying your lipstick. I know having to stick to matte lipsticks 24/7 can become quite boring and a girl would want to switch it up sometimes. If you want to have a glossy effect always use a gloss on the center of the lower and upper lips only.

8. Slaying the Rosy Blush

To achieve a rosy glow that lasts all day on oily skin, always use a powder blush. Stay clear off mousse or stick blush. Mousse blush makes your skin oiler while a stick blush will not blend in well and won’t stay long on oily skin.

9. Don’t Forget Setting Spray

Setting sprays are a big part of making makeup last on oily skin as they provide extra protection and ensures your makeup stays put longer. Spray after putting on your makeup and if you have a long day ahead, it is always convenient to have a travel-size setting spray in your pocket.

10. Always Remove Your Makeup as Soon as You Can

Makeup tends to increase oil on the skin and this is probably the last thing you would want. The best thing you can do for your skin is to remove every trace of makeup immediately when you get home. Follow up with a skin cleanser. Doing this will prevent breakouts and prevent the oiliness from escalating. Most importantly, never go to bed with makeup on.
