Scratch That Itch No More

Itchy1Most of us have gone through an itchy scalp and we know the itch doesn’t give you an advance notice of where or when it will happen. I find it a bit OK for a little scratch, but when the major ones happen, it is impossible to resist and you can’t wait to be alone to scratch that itch.

In other words, if you have had an itchy scalp, you know it can be a tad bit embarrassing especially if it is so bad to the point where if you are to get some relief, you will have to shove both hands inside your hair and really go at it. It might be soothing and all, but you will end up looking like a crazy woman (or man).

The worst part of having an itchy scalp is not being able to get rid of that itch. Not only is it super annoying and uncomfortable, it can lead to hair loss as well.  There are quite a number of reasons why your scalp is itching, but according to experts, some of the causes include scalp psoriasis, dryness, eczema, non-washing of your hair and scalp, overuse and build up of products, head lice, dandruff, scalp sunburn, contact dermatitis and excessive stress and anxiety.
itchy3As usual it is important to know what’s causing your scalp to itch the way it is. After finding out, it is time to stop that itch, and the best thing is that it will not cost you much because some remedies are already in your home, or can be done at home.

Hot oil: There are some really nice essential oils out there that are very beneficial to your hair and skin. If your itchy scalp is being caused by dryness, a hot oil treatment will do wonders; especially olive oil. Just massage the oil on your scalp and hair then cover with a plastic cap. Keep it on for 25 minutes then wash off. This will increase moisture as well as blood flow, leading to a healthier head of hair.

Regular washing:  If your itch is being caused by build-up of products like dust, dirt or other impurities, then you might consider increasing the frequency of your wash days. Just remember to go easy on your scalp so that you do not irritate it further, leading to infections.

aloe veraAloe Vera: What would life be like without a little aloe here and there? When it comes to an itchy scalp, the natural gel from aloe Vera is known for its soothing properties. All you have to do is apply the gel, leave it on for about 45 minutes then wash your hair normally. My guess is that the itch will be gone.

Apple Cider Vinegar:  This is probably one of the best remedies for an itchy scalp. ACV contains anti-inflammatory qualities. So if you think your itchiness is caused by some inflammations, just dilute the ACV with water then apply it on your scalp. Rinse after 10 minutes.

panda2Lemon juice: Massage some juice from a fresh lemon onto your scalp; let it stay for about five minutes then rinse off and wash with your usual shampoo. Remember to not leave it on for long otherwise it might irritate your scalp.

Finally, remember that scalp itchiness can be caused by a number of things, so it is important to not self-diagnose. Consult a dermatologist first with your itchy issues so that he/she can tell you the root cause. If the itch is quite severe, the expert will advise you on the best course of treatment.

Wishing you an itch-free day

xoxo
