Whether you have kinky, curly, straight or wavy hair your hair texture depends solely on the width of your hair strands. It could be thick(course), medium (like mine) or fine. When compared to a piece of thread, fine hair tends to be thinner than the thread, thick hair is thicker than the piece of thread while the medium is in between the two. Hair texture basically refers to the circumference of your hair.

Why your hair texture changes
You may have noticed your hair texture change over the years or after certain periods of time. This is because hair is easily influenced by the following factors:
- Stress
- Too much heat
- Chemically processing hair
- Genetics and aging
- Medical illnesses such as anemia or thyroid disease
- Pregnancy
These changes may leave your hair dry, frizzy and lifeless. Below are a few natural tricks (that I can swear by) which you can use to improve your hair texture and make your hair more manageable.
Tea Rinse
Tea rinses are the craze right now. My personal favorite is the green tea rinse. This tea is loaded with high levels of vitamin E, vitamin C, and Panthenol. Vitamin E helps restore dry and damaged hair, vitamin C guards against UV radiation(call it your hair sunscreen) while Panthenol is a provitamin which helps in strengthening your hair strands to prevent split ends.
How to prepare: Boil one cup of water. Steep one tea bag in for about 2 minutes then let it cool down to room temperature. Transfer this mixture into a spray bottle to make it easier during application.
My routine: I shampoo, then spray the tea rinse, saturating my hair from the tips to the root. Leave it on for 5 minutes while in the shower then rinse off and condition. If you are feeling a little extra you can add a quarter cup of raw apple cider vinegar to your tea rinse for extra benefits. Do not leave the tea rinse on for too long because it may dry out your hair.

Egg Masks
Eggs are loaded with the right nutrient content which can help in taming your hair and help restore your natural hair texture. I have two masks in store that are for oily and dry frizzy hair.
· Egg white hair mask for oily hair
You’ll need egg whites from 2 eggs, 1 tablespoon of honey and one tablespoon of olive oil (you can make more of this mask depending on your hair length). Mix the ingredients well in a bowl to make a paste. Apply this evenly across your scalp and hair then put a shower cap on and let it sit for about 20minutes, then shampoo the hair.
· Egg yolk mask for dry hair
You’ll need 2 egg yolks, 2 tablespoons of olive oil and one cup of water. Mix the egg yolks with the olive oil and add water and apply on your scalp. Don a shower cap and let it sit for about 15 minutes then rinse out with water and shampoo.
These masks are highly effective, and the best thing is that you only have to do them once a month. Doing them too often will lead to protein overload and nobody wants that.
Hot oil treatments
Hot oil treatments can be done all year round on any hair texture. The main reason why I prefer hot oil treatments is because of its moisturizing factor. Natural hair tends to dry out fast and when I found this little hack, my wash days have been a breeze. My personal preference is almond oil, which is a natural light-weight carrier protein oil that helps bind and seal in the moisture. Other benefits include controlling and managing frizziness, dandruff, and a dry scalp.
How to: It is a simple process which involves warming up your preferred hair oil before putting it on your scalp. To do this you can simply pour the oil in an applicator bottle and leave it in a bowl containing hot water, or simply just microwave it as I do. Let it cool then apply from your hair tips all the way to your roots and scalp. Cover with a shower cap for about 15 minutes. You could also sit under a hair dryer or steamer which will help the oil penetrate your hair follicles more.

It is important to remember that hot oil treatments should be done on clean shampooed hair otherwise the oil will just sit on your hair without penetrating in.
