Having dry skin is quite uncomfortable, in addition to being itchy. It restricted me from fully enjoying my life such as going swimming whenever I wanted (not that I can swim to save my life), I had to avoid hot climate areas (I live in one of the hottest places on earth), and I really dreaded winter – just call it a catch 22 situation. These are just some of the things that triggered a flare-up on my dry skin condition, unfortunately, back then I had not thought about trying out natural remedies for dry skin. Dry skin treatments did help, but it was expensive, and I was not so keen on the chemical ingredients I was feeding my dry body. And the funny bit is that my face is very oily, while the rest of the body is the direct opposite, so don’t suggest HydraFacial.
So, at some point in my ashy life, I decided to try out natural remedies for dry skin which are readily available at home (most of them). After all, I’m a mother nature lover (except when it comes to Botox), and I believe it has the answers to almost everything.
Dry skin, also known as xerosis can be caused by environmental factors, aging or an underlying skin condition. Having dry skin means that the outer layer of the skin lacks moisture and if left untreated, it can crack and become infected.
Keeping dry skin moisturized is really important and it’s the number one thing for keeping the condition at bay. I did manage to turn my dry skin around using some natural remedies for dry skin (after so much hitting and missing), and here are some of those that worked, which I still use to date.
5 Natural Remedies for Dry Skin You Can Use at Home
1. Coconut oil
Coconut oil happens to be one of the wonder oils and it is a darling because of its emollient properties. Emollients fill the spaces between skin cells, thereby creating a smooth surface. Coconut oil has saturated fatty acids which also hydrate the skin. The great thing about this oil is that it can be used on a daily basis even on the most sensitive parts of the body such as around the mouth and underneath the eyes. You can even add it to your bath if you like. To be safe, go for the organic type.

2. Oatmeal baths
Oatmeal has been used for centuries as one of the most effective natural remedies for dry skin (ask the oldest person next to you). It contains anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants that soothe irritation. If you are mostly seeking to relieve itching, then an oatmeal bath is the way to go but make sure you moisturize right after. I soaked my legs in an oatmeal bath because they were the worst hit.
3. Omega-3s and antioxidants
There are certain foods which can make your skin appear healthier. Antioxidant-rich foods minimize damage from toxins and aid the body in making healthy cells. Some of the foods that you can eat for healthy skin include tomatoes, blueberries, carrots, peas, beans and lentils among others. Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and adding it to your diet can make your skin glow (remember my salmon obsession about 2 years ago?).

4. Avoid irritants and allergens
Dry skin can also occur suddenly due to the clothes that you are wearing or what you have exposed your skin to. Sitting by the fireplace for long, spending a lot of time in chemically treated water and wearing wool clothing are some of the things that can cause dry skin. It is important to always check what you’re putting on your skin and to treat it gently (I’m not sure if this is one of the natural remedies for dry skin, but you can still use it).
5. Adjusting the shower temperature
Changing your shower routine can easily relieve dry skin. Hot long showers are a no-Bueno for dry skin as it can easily cause damage. Instead, take short showers with warm water. Also, use fragrance-free soaps or gels which are gentler on the skin so as to avoid your skin coming into contact with possible harsh ingredients from traditional soaps.

My takeaway
Following the above natural remedies for dry skin has helped me avoid a frequent dry skin outbreak. I also use a moisturizing sunscreen which I spread all the way to my neck and chest, as this prevents dryness and skin damage, not to mention sunburn. Wearing loose-fitting clothes (mostly cotton), can also draw sweat away from your skin when you’re exposed to skin-irritating conditions or high temperatures.
If these natural remedies for dry skin are not helping with your dry skin, it could be an indication of a more serious condition. I’d suggest you see a specialist for further treatment. Also, do a patch test before trying any of the above.
