I remember how excited I was when I got my first period at 17. This is because I was anxiously waiting for it mostly because my sisters and three-quarters of my female friends already had them. Plus I always felt like a loner when they started talking about periods and crumps, reason being I just couldn’t relate. Going to the bathroom and seeing 2 little drops on my undies felt like a dream come true. Little did I know what lay ahead. From deciding on pads, tampons, panty liners, and now the Lunette menstrual cup? Well, let’s just say it’s been an uphill task, but I’m good at working with what’s working.

Nowadays whenever I get my period I respond in 2 ways, ‘yayyyy they are here’ or ‘what have they come to do’ and I roll my eyes knowing I have to prepare for crumps, cravings and being moody (I’m sure most of us can relate).

My Period Journey

I started out with pads then I later switched to tampons as I found them more comfortable. Also, I didn’t have to stare at the crimson tide every time I went to pee. An acquaintance of mine recently told me about the menstrual cup and how she is into it. For anyone not in the know, a menstrual cup is a reusable feminine hygiene product (talk about sustainability). It looks like a small, flexible funnel-shaped cup made of silicone or rubber that you insert into your vagina to collect period fluid.

I must admit that at first, I did not like the idea of collecting my period into a cup or walking around with something bigger than a tampon in me. But after she told me that the menstrual cup is eco-friendly, quite comfortable and that I could use it for up to 12 hours without worrying about leakages or changing every couple of hours, I was sold and decided to give the Lunette menstrual cup a try.

My Experience with Lunette Menstrual Cup

The Lunette cup is made of flexible silicone and comes in two sizes. Instead of absorbing your flow, like a tampon or pad, it catches and collects it. Easy and safe to use, this vegan menstrual cup is made of soft, toxin-free medical-grade silicone and does not contain any of the chemicals typically found in commercial-grade tampons and pads.

My Lunette cup was the bigger of the two, and I was quite excited to try it. Well, it’s easier said than done because it was a bit uncomfortable to insert. I had thought that I’d insert it just like my regular tampons and wallah! I’d be home-free. Unfortunately, that was not the case. As I was almost giving up, I rang a friend and she told me to breathe and fold it into a triangle. Also, she mentioned that the cup would become softer once inside. I did that and it was actually a bit comfy once inside. But since it was my first menstrual cup rodeo, I can say I could feel it (or maybe it was my little head over-thing it). It lasted me the whole day, almost 12 hours.

I was advised it is better to take out the Lunette menstrual cup in the bathroom when taking a shower in order to manage spillage accidents. I took mine out after about 11 or so hours, carefully emptied the contents in the toilet bowl and washed it. I did have a bit of a mess while removing it but it wasn’t as gross as I had imagined. Just a reminder, before inserting the menstrual cup, make sure your hands are clean (we all know this anyway, with the other period products). The same goes for when you are removing it, and after. The second time around it was way easier, and I actually almost forgot it was in there.

My Takeaway

I’ve used the cup for two periods already, and it’s like riding a bike. I do like the fact that I get to run around the whole day without having to think about changing my tampon. Soon I’ll be able to forget about the anxiety-inducing situation of being at the gym and realizing mid-workout that I don’t have an extra tampon or pad. Whether running, lifting weights, or doing yoga this little cup seems to keep me comfortable. So, exchanging a cup for a tampon every other month does not sound like a bad idea. I guess the more I use it, the more I’ll be more comfortable with it.
