Liposuction Procedure and Weight Loss - All You Need to Know

Is Liposuction a Shortcut to Weight Loss?

Liposculpture Procedure and Weight Loss: How You Can Use One to Achieve the Other Most people looking for a weight loss solution always wonder if a liposuction procedure is a magic bullet that could propel them to their goal weight. Since I’m always coming across this question, I decided to have a chat with Dr. F Russo, a Dubai-based plastic surgeon, and a body contouring expert to see if he can shed some light on the connection between liposculpture and weight loss.

But first things first, what is the difference between Liposuction and Liposculpture?

According to Dr. Russo, liposuction, as most of you know, is the traditional way of just removing unwanted fat from the body. Liposculpture, on the other hand, removes fat in a more advanced way and sculpts the silhouette in the process. This sculpting can also include chiseling the coveted six-pack. And all this is done under local anesthesia, meaning you are awake all this time.

Liposuction Procedure and Weight Loss – the Connection

Liposculpture Procedure and Weight Loss: How You Can Use One to Achieve the OtherAccording to Dr. Russo, this question of liposuction procedure and weight loss is quite relative. This is because it all depends on the person looking to lose weight… “Every case is unique,” he says.  First, the classic approach of Lipo-assisted weight loss is usually done in a manner where you have to diet before undergoing a liposculpture procedure. “But for me, it’s quite the opposite; liposculpture first then diet. Why? Because undergoing a fat removal and body sculpting procedure will motivate you to lose more weight after you see the immediate changes to your body.”

So, explains Dr. Russo, Liposculpture is not a shortcut, but more of a motivation tool. “When you get motivated, you will automatically start watching your weight through diet and exercise because you will need to better the results that are already showing.”

How Many Kilos Can One Lose with a Liposuction Procedure?

Liposculpture Procedure and Weight Loss: How You Can Use One to Achieve the OtherAccording to Dr. Russo, some patients request overall fat removal, while others want targeted fat removal. The fat removed ranges anywhere from 1 liter or less to 4+ Liters of fat. “My safe size for a Liposuction procedure is 4 liters of pure fat, which if you include the filtration liquid will be about 7 – 8 liters in total,” he explains, adding that in the end, 4 liters of pure fat is already a very big change.

In terms of kilos, since fat is lighter than water, some people think that by getting rid of 4 liters of fat they are going to lose a total weight of 4 Kilos. The total weight loss will be less than that, but the results will be big because your silhouette will be contoured.

After the Liposculpture

So, after the procedure, Dr. Russo explains that he puts a goal for the patient, which involves losing 5 kilos in the first month. “I prefer to take it slow with the patient because weight loss is like a marathon and not a 100 meters sprint.  If you rush the journey, then it will backfire on you big time.”

On the other hand, if you don’t follow a healthy diet, the fat will return but in a different area. “So be careful because the rumors that you never gain the weight back after lipo are false; because the weight will always return but to other places like the thighs, hips, chin, and any other body area that was not touched by the lipo.”

Liposculpture, the Procedure
  • A liposculpture procedure is done under local anesthesia, meaning there’s no general anesthesia required.
  • Immediately after, the patient goes back home, and takes only two days to recover.
  • The patient then has to wear a compression garment for 30 days to reduce edema and assist the skin to shrink for better results.
  • Two weeks’ post-procedure you can start serious training.

Although the liposculpture and liposuction procedure can assist in your weight loss efforts, in the end, it’s all up to you and the choices you make about leading a healthier lifestyle.
