Home-made Hair Rinses For Oily hair

Who doesn’t love summer? Afternoons by the pool with friends, barbecues and oh yes oily hair. Your scalp starts working overtime during summer leaving your hair quite greasy. These two home-made hair rinses will help you end your oily hair blues and soften your hair.

Lavender, Rosemary and apple cider vinegar rinse

  • Lavender: Has antibacterial properties that help with dandruff and an itchy scalp. It also leaves your hair really soft and moisturized.
  • Rosemary: It is a good cleanser, strengthener and wait for it… It darkens hair and covers the grays. Ps: it smells really good.
  • Apple Cider vinegar: It mainly helps in balancing your hair pH leaving your hair with just the right amount of natural oil. If you have used it before, you definitely know it has a certain smell that not most people are willing to put up with for long. The smell usually goes away, the scents from lavender and rosemary will really come in handy.

You’ll need: 4 cups of water, 1/2 cup dried rosemary, 1/2 cup dried lavender and 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar.

Lemon and mint hair rinse

  • Lemon is great for oily hair due to its tonic and astringent properties. It helps with dandruff and soothes scalp irritation.
  • Mint, on the other hand, increases the local blood flow to the scalp plus gives you this cooling sensation and refreshes your scalp.

You’ll need: 1 teaspoon of lemon peel, 1 tablespoon of fresh mint leaves and 2 cups of water.

Note that using lemon too often can lighten your hair color.

Home-made Hair Rinses That Work Wonders

Home-made Hair Rinses For Dry hair

Before I discovered home-made hair rinses, I used to pile up conditioner on my hair, mix a bunch of oils in hopes that it would stay soft and moisturized. When wet my hair is really soft, curly and defined so when I add conditioner it feels like heaven. These results however never used to last for long. I’d wake up the next day with really dry tangled hair. This made me turn to wigs with cornrows under since I couldn’t manage my dry hair. I knew I was doing something wrong but I could quite put my finger on it. After a long research, I stumbled upon these home-made hair rinses and tried them out. The results were well, what I expected.

Hibiscus and licorice hair rinse

  • Licorice: Has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that stimulate hair follicles and soothe dry scalp.
  • Hibiscus: It is an amazing all natural hair conditioner. It contains mucilage which hydrates and makes detangling a breeze. It also lessens grey hair and reduces hair loss.

You’ll need: 1 stick if licorice or 1 teaspoon of its powder, 2 fresh hibiscus flowers or 1 tablespoon of dried powder, 1 teaspoon of honey and two cups of water.

Hibiscus usually adds red hues to your hair so don’t be shocked when you see your hair color looking a tad different.

Marshmallow hair rinse

Marshmallow root is high in plant proteins plus it has high mucilage content. The root nourishes your scalp and promotes healthy hair growth and shine.

You’ll need: 2 tablespoons of marshmallow root, 2 cups of water and a few drops of Argan oil.

Now that you know the herbs a bit better, I bet you are wondering how you can make your hair rinse with them. The process in all of them is just the same; follow these steps:

  1. Pre-soak the herbs if you are using dried flowers or leaves for about 7-8 hours. For myself, I prefer leaving them overnight which lets me get all the goodness from the herbs. If you are using fresh flowers or leaves you can skip this part.
  2. Put the herbs with water into a pan and boil. Reduce the flame and let it simmer for about 2-3 minutes then turn off your stove and let it cool.
  3. Strain out the herbs and transfer into a glass container.

How to use: Apply the mixture to freshly shampooed hair and massage your scalp. Let it soak up for about 5 minutes then rinse out with water and let it air dry.

Tips:

If you shampoo your hair often you can replace your shampoo with these home-made hair rinses. Yes, they do work. Plus, did I mention they are 100% natural? I usually make my rinses then freeze them ( I use my ice cube tray). This makes it really easy to use especially as a daily shampoo.
