Hair Transplant is not a very new technique in the cosmetics industry. On the other hand, it seems to have become quite popular in the last couple of years. Hair transplant procedures are used as a form of hair loss treatment, which give good results.
Hair loss on the other hand is not a pretty thing to go through. It affects both men and women. But women always seem to be more emotionally affected by the loss of their crowning glory more than men. Actually, hair loss has become quite prevalent. Recent surveys show that at least 2 out of 3 men, and 1 in every 5 women in the UAE suffers from hair loss; permanent or otherwise.
With these statistics, it is always important to get to the root cause of what is causing your hair loss and act on it. Sometimes hair loss can be permanent. Other times it can be just a signal from your body telling you that something is wrong somewhere and that you should fix it ASAP. If this has happened to you, then you understand the relief one feels when some bald patches on your scalp start filling with hair.
For other people, the root cause of their hair loss might be down to genetics, which is a more permanent form of hair loss in women and men. This cause has led to the development of many hair loss solutions, from hair growth therapy to taking supplements like Rogaine aka minoxidil and more. At the moment, what has caught the attention of most folk that are facing hair loss, hair thinning, and balding is hair transplant. I had a conversation with the one and only Anisa Vrabac, who is a hair loss treatment expert as well as the head of the hair transplant department at Dubai Cosmetic Surgery, one of the leading hair loss treatment centers.
Increase in Hair Transplant Procedures Worldwide
“The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) the number of people, both men and women, looking to treat hair loss increased drastically in 2015. Hair transplant procedures increased by 28% compared to previous years,” says Anisa.
She adds that the leading reason for this increase is the fact that most people seem to have realized that they do not have to accept baldness, because now they have a choice. “You see, hair transplantation not only restores hair, but it gives one a natural hair line, making it look like they never even lost hair in the first place.”
Hair transplant works by harvesting hair follicles from the back of one’s head (or wherever the hair is the thickest) and transplanting them to the bald area through a process known as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) or Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). “Both of these are methods of permanent hair restoration, and can even be applied to restore your eyebrows or eyelashes.”
Although it all sounds too good to be true, the hardest part is the patience. After the procedure which can take anywhere from six hours to 12 hours, depending on the number
of hair grafts to be transplanted (it can range from 1000 to 4000+ grafts), you will start seeing the first signs of hair growth after about six months. “Final results are seen after 9 to 12 months.”
And is this new hair natural; you might wonder? “The transplanted hair is completely natural. It can be cut, colored and treated, just as one would do with their hair,” she says. In addition, just like your ‘native’ hair, you have to take care of it and learn how you can avoid the other causes of hair loss.
Hair transplant / Hair loss treatment facts to keep in mind
- If you know someone who is facing hair loss, don’t make fun of them because hair loss can affect a person’s life negatively from; feeling embarrassed, having low self-esteem to feeling frustrated and unattractive. So, just be nice, it will never hurt to be nice.
- According to statistics, Androgenetic Alopecia, which is a form of hair loss caused by genetics, is the leading cause of permanent hair loss, and affects about 90% of all hair loss cases; for both men and women.
- Hair transplantation is an effective method of hair restoration, which gives the most natural and permanent results compared to other hair loss treatment methods.
- At one of the leading hair transplant clinics in Dubai, 15 percent of all the hair transplant patients are women, while 85% are men (you see, not every man wants to look like Bruce Willis or Jason Statham).
- Celebrities who have (allegedly) done hair transplant procedures include Wayne Rooney, Calum Best and… I think I’ll stop there.
