It’s said that a head full of gorgeous healthy bouncy hair is a sign of good health. Nobody wants to see a load of hair strands on their hairbrushes when combing their hair. I confess that I freak out like crazy when I see my hair shed even a tiny bit. It’s natural for us to lose about 50-100 hair strands per day, which doesn’t really affect our hair balance since the same amount grows back. Hair that is too dry, brittle and full of split ends is a sure sign there could be something wrong. I have put together a few tried & tested healthy hair tips, which you can also follow to improve your hair regimen and finally get that beautiful mane most of us desire.

Watch your diet
Ever heard of the saying you are what you eat? Well.. just like your skin needs nutrients to look and feel healthy, so does your hair. A deficiency in these nutrients may lead to hair thinning and hair loss. You don’t have to worry because I have your back. Below are some types of foods that you could add to your diet based on your hair type.
- Dry hair – Brown rice, bananas, vitamin E capsules and lots of raw vegetables
- Oily hair – Salads, fresh fruits, yogurt, fresh fruits, and green vegetables
- Normal hair – Fish, chicken, and sprouts.
Shampooing your hair
How often do you shampoo your hair? Why do you need to shampoo your hair? See, hair strands are covered in natural oil (sebum) which is secreted from your scalp to keep your hair healthy and protected. Shampoo opens up hair cuticles. The sulfates in the shampoo surround dirty oils and lift them away.
As one of the most important healthy hair tips I’ve learned, being cautious about what is in your shampoo is of utmost importance. Check what’s in it and ensure it removes only the dirt and oils but not your sebum. Alternatively, use natural shampoos. Over-washing also leads to unhealthy hair since natural moisture is stripped off. Remember that too much of a good thing can be bad.
PS: Be gentle when you are washing your scalp and hair and do not brush too hard. If it’s too tangled start with a wide-toothed comb then proceed to use your brush.

Conditioning your hair
As shampoos open up your hair cuticles when washing, conditioners do the vise versa. They lock nutrients in and pollutants out which strengthens the hair shaft. A stronger hair shaft breaks less and has fewer split ends. Conditioners also help with frizz. Hair gets frizzy when the cuticle layer is raised leaving moisture to pass through. You can lock in that moisture with homemade conditioners which are quite cheap and simple to use. *check our homemade hair conditioners.
How You Can Fix Your Damaged Hair
If our healthy hair tips are a tad bit too late and your hair is already damaged, don’t fret because it’s not too late yet. It sucks when your hair gets frizzy fast, doesn’t curl up right or gets too dry. Is your hair partly healthy and shiny while the ends are just messed up and completely different? Thinking about cutting the damaged parts? Well, don’t, because I’m giving you two of my favorite remedies for damaged hair.
- You’ll need apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons of olive oil and three egg whites. Mix them then apply on dry hair for half an hour. Rinse the shampoo.
- Using the holy grail – shea butter. Shea butter is known as a natural healer. Not only is it good for your skin but for your hair too. It is rich in vitamin A, E, and K. It also contains fatty acids which your hair needs and has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-oxidant properties. Using it is quite simple. You can choose to apply it directly on your scalp and hair as you do with your oils or make a mask.
