Well, most of us have heard about the Brazilian Butt Lift or BBL if you like. And some have even gone through the procedure. After all, in the last couple of years, a prominent behind has been all the rage, with some people spending thousands of dollars to emulate celebrities like Kim Kardashian and others (talk about the Kardashian Effect – although Kim denied having any butt implants… maybe BBL?).
I’ve heard people say they don’t want to go plastic or be plastic or look plastic (which I assume means silicone implants and whatnot), and I tend to wonder, is a Brazilian Butt Lift plastic? After all, it uses your own fat with zero foreign matter. To help you answer this question and get a snippet on how the procedure works, I turned to no other than our trusted go-to plastic surgeon Dr. Rory McGoldrick, who has done lots of Brazilian Butt Lift procedures.

What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?
A Brazilian Butt Lift, according to Dr McGoldrick, is a form of buttock augmentation that uses the transfer of a person’s own fat, from one area of the body to the buttocks to give it an overall well-defined and rounded buttock physique. “This has been made more popular as the number of curvier Hollywood celebrities continues to rise, making more people begin to embrace and accept more round and prominent buttocks.”
On the other hand, he continues, there are those who are unhappy with either the size or shape of their buttocks due to a number of reasons like genetics, weight loss or just nature. And if they are in a position to do something about it mentally, physically and financially, then a Brazilian Butt Lift would be the way to go.
Other Ways of Augmenting the Buttocks
Other than the Brazilian Butt Lift, buttock augmentation can also be achieved through buttock implants or injectables using Sculptra, which is basically a poly-L-lactic acid that augments your butt by stimulating your body’s own collagen production. “But of all these methods, the BBL, which uses fat grafting, is the most popular,” he notes, adding that this is because it gives more definition with natural-looking results.
Why Should One Go for a BBL?
“Depending on a person’s physique, fat grafting in comparison to implants is mostly recommended because with fat transfer, there is no chance of any allergic reactions, recovery is quicker and fairly safer,” states Dr McRory, noting that implants on the other can have infections due to a number of reasons and there’s always that chance where your body can reject the implant, not to mention Capsular contracture, which is a bit rare when it comes to the gluteus maximus. “In addition, by removing fat from other areas of the body, it gives an overall contoured effect as well as a more defined silhouette or simply an hour-glass figure, with curves in the right places.”
How a Brazilian Butt Lift Works
First and foremost, explains the good doctor, you have to go to a board-certified plastic surgeon who has years of experience in the field. Anything short of that and you’ll be taking a big risk. “During the consultation, I will give your body an overall ‘inspection’ to see if you are a good candidate, as well as find out why you need the procedure to be done. For instance, you might be in need of a bigger behind, shapelier behind, or simply an adjustment to make both cheeks uniform.”
After identifying the need and how much fat will be needed to be transferred, he continues, I will identify again the area of your body where this fat will be harvested from. “This should be easy because excess fat deposits rest around your stomach area, waist and thighs.” On the day of the procedure, the plastic surgeon will give you local anaesthesia, then the harvesting of fat begins, which is done through liposuction. “After removing fat from the areas where it is in excess, instead of discarding it like in a liposuction procedure, it will be carefully treated before it’s injected into your buttocks through small incisions.”
Expected Results
According to Dr Rory, the results of a Brazilian Butt Lift are long-lasting, and not only do they give you a more defined and perky backside, but it also improves the recipient’s self-esteem, especially if she/he (yes men get BBLs too) was uncomfortable with the backside beforehand, and affected their way of life.
Recovery time after a Brazilian Buttock augmentation is 2-3 weeks, and the final results continue forming until 3 months. “Immediately after the procedure you can also see the changes to your body, but at that time you’ll be feeling sore and bruised, so it’s important to take some time off and just relax.”

Plastic or Nah?
Well, after this enlightening chat with Dr McRory, I’m not sure how to categorize a Brazilian Butt Lift (why do we feel the need categorize things anyway? We should probably leave them as they are). Just remember, you should never feel under pressure to alter your body, not unless you want to. And even if you do, you should go to an experienced Board Certified plastic surgeon, and your expectations should be realistic. Don’t expect to look like Kim K. the moment you walk out of the surgery room, give yourself time to heal and to adjust to your new body. As usual, what works for Kim or Nicki, might not work for you; different body types and lifestyles play a big role.
