At some point in our lives, most of us have had the pesky chronic skin condition, dandruff. Though it’s not contagious or medically concerning, this common cosmetic issue can be quite embarrassing and uncomfortable, from the itchy scalp to the white flakes on your shoulders. But the good news is that you don’t have to live with that mess on your head! This is because there are remedies for dandruff, and these include some of the best hair oils out there, which I’m sure you didn’t know about.
First things first; what causes dandruff?
According to some studies, some of the common causes of dandruff are yeast and fungus infections, dry skin, build-up of hair products, and sensitivity to hair products. Others include inflammatory conditions such as eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, and psoriasis (which might need professional help).

5 of the best hair oils to soothe your scalp and treat dandruff
1. Tea Tree Oil
The antiseptic and antibacterial properties found in tea tree oil enable it to kill bacteria and the specific strain of fungus that accumulate and cause dandruff. It also has a cooling sensation when applied to an itchy and inflamed scalp. And although tee tree oil can be used on ship-shape skin, people with sensitive skin may tend to get easily irritated by the oil. It is therefore advisable to dilute it with a carrier oil such as coconut, jojoba or olive oil. Apply on your scalp and leave on for a few minutes before rinsing.
2. Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil is one of the best hair oils because of its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties which help soothe itchy scalp caused by dandruff. It absorbs excess oils that may have accumulated while still moisturizing your scalp. Just like tea tree oil, peppermint oil may cause a burning sensation if used in its pure form. To reduce this effect, you can mix a few drops of the oil with mashed avocados or olive oil and massage into your scalp for a few minutes before shampooing.

3. Lavender Oil
Lavender oil has a heavenly scent that can calm you down while healing your scalp. Its antimicrobial property helps in preventing fungi and bacteria. It also treats skin inflammation and dryness while giving a calming effect. Mix the oil with carrier oils and apply on the scalp before shampooing as usual.
4. Lemongrass Oil
Lemongrass oil is not only used in aromatherapy but is also one of the best hair oils used to treat dandruff. It reduces dandruff by fighting a certain strain of yeast (Malassezia furfur) which is associated with the condition. It also helps soothe a dry and itchy scalp. Its astringent properties sap excessive oil from your scalp without causing excessive dryness. A few drops of lemongrass oil should be mixed with a carrier oil and massage into your scalp for a few minutes then shampoo normally.

5. Chamomile Oil
Chamomile oil has various healing properties. It helps soothe dry and itchy scalp caused by dandruff while its inflammatory properties reduce inflammation and redness. It also regulates sebum on your scalp which controls the fungus that thrives in oily areas. It ensures that your scalp is not dry by balancing out the natural oils and moisture. Mix the oil with a carrier oil and use as a hair rinse after a wash. If you wish to rinse it off leave it on your scalp for about 10 minutes.
Before using any of these best hair oils (according to us) ensure you carry out a skin patch test to ascertain that the oil won’t react with your scalp. You can alternatively add a few drops of the essential oils to your shampoo and enjoy their benefits.
