When I heard that there was a new Asian street food outlet in Dubai’s massive dining scene, I immediately knew I had to give it a try. Simply known as the WOK BOYZ, I expected to see hippy young guys wok’ing their way into your stomach, and my expectations were not disappointed. From the vibrant mural covering the front of the small feisty eatery to the bright colors reminiscent of afternoons spent in Asia, the Asian street food experience begins at the first step.
Tucked away on a street beside the bustling Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, WOK BOYZ is the brainchild of three Dubai foodies, who call themselves … wait for it … the WOK BOYZ. I was hoping to meet them and have a word on how they came about this idea, but they were not at hand when myself and my partner in crime visited (next time maybe).

An Infusion of the Far East Streets and Dubai’s Urban Environment
When we arrived early in the evening, the eatery didn’t look so busy, but the delivery guys seemed to be, meaning most people preferred to be wok’d at home. Immediately there was a whiff of Far East flavors; add that to Dubai’s busy urban environment, and the picture is complete.
We were sat outside because there’s not much room indoors – it’s street food after all. The space outside was well laid out, with wooden chairs and tables and a lot of greenery. And despite the current weather, there was a cool breeze coming through, which made it more comfortable. This made me think of what will happen during the sweltering and humid Dubai summer months, but the manager assured us that they already have a plan in place, and the cool breeze (man-made this time) will keep blowing.
Your Wok Your Way
Going through the menu, we realized you have to take charge and create your own wok experience, from the base, fresh vegetables, protein, sauces, and toppings. For appetizers, we went for prawn tempura and their spicy Korean wings, which happen to be one of the WOK BOYZ signature items. Just to mention, the prices are quite fair, so you can order as much as you want. On the Wok side, we chose egg noodles, with some beef and lots of veggies, added some Indonesian heat sauce, and topped everything off with fried garlic. The portions here seemed quite generous, so we decided to share the meal.

Getting Wok’d to Hot Wings Heaven
The order was ready in about 15 or so minutes, and it was time to dig into our Asian street food. First up were the prawn tempuras, which were ok. Then next were the spicy Korean wings, which for lack of better words, it was love at first bite. From the spicy sauce flavor to the crunchiness, we did not need any sriracha or whatever else was before us. Both of us looked like kids digging into their first birthday cake. From the sauce-covered fingers to my friend’s face which was covered in that secret sauce, I’m sure it will take some time before my palate gets over it. In the middle of our deep hot wings dive, the manager – Maheshwar Barik – interrupted to ask how everything was. We raised our heads, and I guess he took one look at us and simply said ‘I’ll be back later’.

After having a taste of hot wings heaven, it was time for our noodles, which true to what we thought, the serving was quite generous and tasty as well, served in pail-style takeaway boxes. Actually too generous to the point where we could not finish one shared serving. So if you plan on heading there, make sure your tummy is a bit empty.
The Healthiest Wok in Town?
One thing I also noticed is that this Asian street food outlet considers itself the healthiest wok in town. They have quinoa on-the-wok, which can be paired with chicken, tofu, prawn or beef, tossed in mouth-watering sauces like Tuk-Tuk (Thai green curry) and Gangnam Style (sweet and spicy Korean chili paste) among others.

And it’s bold and intense flavors have become quite popular not only with Asian cuisine aficionados but fit foodies and party animals that rave until the early morning hours (yes, they are open until 3:45 AM on weekends.
