Yesterday (May 27) was International Sunscreen Day, and with the summer on the horizon (although it feels like it’s already here), we have put together some top sunscreen tips about staying sun protected while playing in the sun, sand, and water. By following these simple tips, the young and the young at heart can take action against the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays and ensure they don’t leave red-faced and itchy (most of us have been there, done that and got the t-shirt)!
Top Sunscreen Tips to Follow
Use at least SPF30 Sunscreen that’s Waterproof
Although in most water play spaces there are plenty of shaded areas to escape from the glare, experts recommend that you prepare by applying an SPF30+ waterproof sunscreen to your entire body at least 30 minutes before entering the water, which shields against 97% of UVB rays. Also, the most important words to look for sunscreen tubes are “broad spectrum”, which means protection against both types of rays: UVA (Ageing) and UVB (Burning) rays.

Re-apply Often
Being out at the beach, pool or a water park like Laguna Waterpark at La Mer means you’ll be in and out of the water constantly, lazing in the pool, splashing around or sliding down exhilarating waterslides. To stay sun smart, it is recommended that you reapply sunscreen at least every hour in water and to make sure to wait at least 15 minutes before sun exposure for maximum effectiveness, before seizing the fun in the sun.
Seek Shade
UV rays are always at their peak between 11:00am and 3:00pm; therefore, you should take scheduled shade breaks in shaded areas, particularly during these times.
Cover Up
You should never assume that if you can’t feel yourself burning, then you are not. Invest in a UV t-shirt, hat, and sunglasses. Choose a hat with a broad rim (more than 3 inches), angled downwards to provide the ultimate UV protection.

Protect the Children
If you are planning on sharing your time in the sun with some little humans, then don’t forget to protect them as well. Ensure the little person’s skin is protected throughout by following these top sunscreen tips and setting a good example. Opt for a hypoallergenic and fragrance-free sunscreen that comes in a form that is easy to use on a wriggly child, whether this means a gel, lotion or spray. Colorful sunscreens are also a good investment as they appeal to kids and make it easier to see what areas have been covered well. Layer sunscreen generously and thoroughly, making sure not to forget the little nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck. Lips can also burn, so use a lip balm with SPF protection. And don’t forget, protective clothing such as hats with brims and sunglasses are also just as important for the little people.
