We all know the benefits of having an early morning routine but have we ever thought about how important a night routine is? Most people don’t even have night routines; they just come home after a long day and head straight for the bed. Having a night routine can actually be more beneficial than you think and it can make you more productive the next day.
Here’s a great list of what successful people do every night before bed:
-
Plan the Next Day
Having a plan for the next day has many benefits. It makes you reflect on your day and puts realistic tasks for the day after that can help you get closer to goals by taking baby steps. Aside from the fact that you will be more organized, it’s going to give you a better night’s rest knowing that you know how you’re going to start your day, what you’re going to do and what your priorities are rather than waking up in a state of stress because you lack direction.
Daymond John who is an entrepreneur and investor on ABC’s ‘Shark Tank’ says that he reviews his list in the evening and if he seems to have missed out on something, he’ll make sure that it’s on the list for the next day, according to Business Insider.
Lauren Conrad, designer and entrepreneur also believes in the same philosophy. She balances her personal life and career life by keeping a to-do list by her bed and she stresses on the importance of setting small goals for the next day and making time for yourself. Soon, people are going to be asking you how you do it all!

Clear Their Mind
Different people have different ways that they can clear their mind. Everyone needs to find an escape that they can go to that will ground them and make them feel more at peace. Nowadays we live in the Digital Age where everything is constant and instant due to advancement in technology and smartphones. No matter how successful, strong and competent you are, we all need to relax every now and again. Think about what relaxes you. For Gwyneth Paltrow, it’s a hot salt bath every night and a pressure-point massage to end a busy day.
For CEO of social media company Buffer, it’s a short walk every evening before calling it a night. This can help you stay away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and appreciate nature that grounds you and relaxes you.
Oprah Winfrey, the ‘Queen of All Media’ and billionaire, it’s mediation. She does it before and after she wakes up and she claims that it’s helped her so much that she even launched her own meditation app hoping it will encourage others to adopt her practice, as well.
Find what helps you clear your mind and make sure you do it every night before bed. The payoff is priceless and it will help you in the long run.

Unplug from the World
This includes your social media, phones, TV and any other form of technology. Countless people make the mistake of sleeping next to their phones at night or leave their phones, iPads, and laptops next to or under their pillows. Researchers have come to an agreement that any kind of screen time before bed can only do you more harm than good. Aside from the harmful effects, it can have on your health, it’s a huge distraction that can keep you up.
Ariana Huffington is known for taking her sleep very seriously after one time she was so exhausted that she actually fell and broke her cheekbone. Now, Huffington makes sure to turn off all her electronic devices that can keep her distracted, takes a hot bath and reaches for something to unwind herself like a book, she told CNBC.
Sometimes, it’s not enough to just disconnect from work, you should unplug from everything completely and focus on having some you-time every night before bed to relax and unwind from the day’s stresses. The ringtone or notification tone on your phone can automatically put you in an alert state since its associated with work for many people. So, in essence, stop checking your email, stop checking your phone and stop staying up late hours on social media because it’s not doing you any good.

Review and Reflect
Taking time at the end of the day to review what you’ve done and to reflect on what you can improve is one of the perfect ways to a productive and long day’s ending. As far as daily routines of successful people go, Benjamin Franklin’s is one that is pretty well documented. At the end of a night, Franklin always asked himself, “What good did I do today?”
Anisa Purbasari wrote an article on her implementing Franklin’s review and reflection of his day to see if it made a difference to her days. After trying the experiment for almost a week, she came to conclude that, at the end of the week, her sentiment mirrored Franklin’s — she felt happier while striving to be better, even when she didn’t quite measure up.
knowing that she’s working towards being better and improving herself gave her a boost of happiness, particularly when she took the time to reflect on what she learned. She also recognized the importance of reminding herself that imperfections will always exist. While bad habits don’t disappear overnight, the first step to eliminating them is to be aware of them in the first place.

Read Books
Reading is a great way to disconnect from this world. Aside from its benefits on mental stimulation, memory improvement, and knowledge, it’s a great way to de-stress after a long day. Unsurprisingly, Bill Gates reads for an hour before bed every night even if he gets home late. Aside from its benefits, he considers it a ‘part of his falling asleep’ he told The Seattle Times.
It doesn’t matter how much stress you have going on in your personal or work life, there is no denying the fact that it all seems to grow distant when you start reading. It keeps one distracted and lets creativity take over. Dr. Lewis, a researcher from the University of Sussex carried out a test to show how reading reduces stress. He found that subjects only needed to read, silently, for six minutes to slow down the heart rate and ease tension in the muscles, he found. In fact, it got subjects to stress levels lower than before they started.
He goes onto further claim that, It really doesn’t matter what book you read, by losing yourself in a thoroughly engrossing book you can escape from the worries and stresses of the everyday world and spend a while exploring the domain of the author’s imagination.
All in all, we all have different ways that stick with us since we’re all built differently. Something that might work for one person doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s going to work for someone else. What’s important is that each and every one of us must have a night routine after a long day that is going to help you unwind, see the bigger picture and be ready for the next day well-prepared, more productive and rejuvenated.
